Characteristics of Red OakThe sapwood of the oak ranges from white to pale brown, while the heartwood is reddish brown. A fast-growing oak with wide rings is heavier than an oak that grows more slowly. The slower-growing variety has a more even grain than the southern species, with many more growth rings per inch.
